Here are two inspiring updates from the Carers Centre. Thanks to Liz, our Adult Carers Coordinator, for sharing!

First, let's say congratulations to Kathleen, who has been awarded a grant of £5,000 from the Thomson Charitable Trust to help maintain the Carers Choir. The choir has been a great success, and this funding will ensure even more unpaid carers can benefit.

Here's an example of the impact this choir has made, in the words of a choir member:

“I joined the choir in January this year and only knew about it through my support worker. She accompanied me for the first visit as I was a bit apprehensive, and I must say from day one, I was made very welcome from the other members and Amy the choirmaster.
Since I am a full-time carer, it is very hard to get out, but this suits me as I'm away from my caring duties for just a couple of hours and also I really enjoy singing.
I would like to say on a personal note that joining this choir has given me a bit of freedom for a couple of hours doing something I thoroughly enjoy. During my time, we have done 2 performances at the Civic Hall and most recently at the Day Centre which I enjoyed, and I think all of our audiences really appreciated it. I think it is so beneficial to all who are involved in the choir to continue.
I have met so many lovely people and always leave each rehearsal with a smile. I know in these hard times money is very limited, but I must emphasise that without this choir a lot of people would feel quite isolated as this might be the only time they get out to socialise.”

Secondly, we can congratulate Kerry, our Young Adult Carers support worker, who has made 15 successful Carers Trust Applications for driving lessons for Young Adult Carers. As each award is worth £300, this is a total of £4,500 raised by Kerry since March. She also has submitted another 8 applications awaiting a response the Carers Trust Panel.

Without this financial support, many Young Adult Carers would find it difficult to take this first step to independence, which may help them enter the job market or attend university. The difference these grants will make for these young people is immeasurable.

Bravo, Kathleen and Kerry! We're so happy to hear about your success.
