A unique partnership between UHI Perth and PKAVS is making a meaningful difference in the lives of local students.
Led by Student Engagement Coordinator Sam Monie, The Big Project has supported hundreds of students through challenges ranging from financial hardship to mental wellbeing. This year, the project took a major leap forward through collaboration with PKAVS' The Big Hoose Project—an innovative community donation initiative helping individuals and families across Perth and Kinross.
By working together, the two projects connected UHI Perth students with urgently needed support such as food, toiletries, household essentials and warm clothing, all delivered with care, dignity and without judgement.
“This partnership has been transformational,” said Sam Monie, Student Engagement Coordinator at UHI Perth. “It’s not just about giving students things—it’s about showing them they matter. It’s about creating a community of support where students feel safe, respected and understood.”
The impact has been profound. Students accessing The Big Project this year have received:
Direct help during times of crisis
Access to free essential items through The Big Hoose network
Financial and wellbeing support referrals
A safe and supportive environment to reach out for help
The initiative has also earned national recognition, being shortlisted for the Supporting Student Wellbeing Award at the Herald Higher Education Awards 2025.
“We’re incredibly proud of what this partnership has achieved,” said Paul Paterson, Project Lead at PKAVS. “By working together, we’ve been able to remove barriers for students and ensure support reaches the right people at the right time.”
The Big Project will return in the next academic year, with renewed energy, fresh ideas and the same unwavering commitment to putting student wellbeing at the heart of campus life.
